In response to a query from a group of cardinals seeking clarification on the matter, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has suggested that priests may now give their blessings to same-sex couples.
While the Church still considers same-sex relationships “objectively sinful” and will not recognize same-sex marriages, the Pope said that requests for blessings should be treated with “pastoral charity.”
He also stated that the Church will review the possibility of blessing same-sex marriages, which marks a departure from its longstanding opposition to such unions.
Furthermore, he emphasized that pastoral prudence should be exercised in determining forms of blessing that do not convey a mistaken concept of marriage.
Finally, the Pope urged the Church to approach its relationships with people with kindness, patience, understanding, tenderness, and encouragement.
