The Chief Executive Officer of Amazon, Andy Jassy recently announced in a staff memo that the company was set to lay off over 18,000 workers which according to him will help them pursue their long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure.
Eliminating over 18,000 workers would be its biggest cut yet, but at the end of September 2022, Amazon had over 1.5 million employees, therefore these cuts will represent just 1% of its workforce.
Employees to be laid off will include people working on various experimental and unprofitable businesses which comprise teams working on telehealth services, delivery robots, kids delivery robots, etc.
In the memo, the CEO stated that the company will provide severances, traditional health benefits, and possible job replacement opportunities for the various affected workers.
