The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony was held on Sunday, February 4th, and was aptly dubbed the ‘Year of the Women’, as female artists dominated the major categories. Pop superstar Taylor Swift set a new record by winning Album of the Year for the fourth time, and also announced from the Grammys stage that she would release a new album in April titled ‘The Tortured Poets Department’. Swift also took home the prize for Best Pop Vocal Performance.

Billie Eilish claimed Song of the Year for her ballad “What Was I Made For?” which was written for the “Barbie” movie soundtrack. Miley Cyrus was awarded Record of the Year for her empowerment anthem “Flowers”. Victoria Monét, an R&B and pop singer, was named Best New Artist and thanked her mom, “a single mom raising this really bad girl.”

SZA, who received nine nominations, won three trophies including Best R&B song for “Snooze”. Indie rock band boygenius, formed by musicians Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, claimed three awards as well.

The Recording Academy, consisting of musicians, producers, engineers, and others, chose the winners. The group has worked to diversify its membership in recent years by inviting more women and people of color to its ranks.

The ceremony’s live performances were also dominated by women, with legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell drawing an emotional reaction and a standing ovation. Other performers included Dua Lipa and Tracy Chapman, who memorably performed a duet version of her hit “Fast Car” with Luke Combs.

Overall, the 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony was a night to remember, with female artists making history and taking home the top honors.
