At 07:45 WAT today, August 25, 2025, the Nigerian government announced securing $190 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to fund solar power projects in northern Nigeria. The concessional loan, finalized during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Brasília, will support off-grid and mini-grid solar systems in states like Kano, Borno, and Kaduna, targeting 500,000 households and 10,000 small businesses by 2027.

The initiative aims to boost energy access, drive industrialization, and align with Nigeria’s sustainability goals under Vision 2030, which seeks a 20% renewable energy share by 2030. Japanese firms will provide technical assistance to enhance local solar technology expertise. The deal could create 15,000 jobs and reduce carbon emissions by 1.5 million tons annually, strengthening Nigeria’s leadership in African renewable energy. However, bureaucratic delays, as seen in past projects like the Mambilla Hydropower, and security risks in the north could hinder implementation.

Community leaders on X emphasized the need for affordable tariffs to ensure accessibility, while the Nigerian Climate Action Network called for transparent fund management to prevent mismanagement. This agreement enhances Nigeria’s international partnerships, countering China’s influence in Africa’s energy sector, and sets a precedent for regional renewable energy adoption. The government is urged to establish a task force for swift execution and robust oversight to ensure success.
