The Federal Government has announced the disbursement of N3 billion to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mitigate the impact of recent flooding and bolster agricultural productivity. This initiative was revealed by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, during a press briefing at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday, following an inspection of flood-affected areas in Kebbi State.
Mr. Edun stated, “The National Economic Council has proactively decided to allocate N3 billion to support all states and the FCT in mitigating the effects of this year’s flooding. This support will position states like Kebbi to better prepare their farmers for the crucial dry season farming, which we anticipate will be successful, well-planned, and effectively executed.”
He emphasized that this initiative aims to ensure food availability at affordable prices, thereby helping to curb inflation and stabilize the economy. Mr. Edun also conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to supporting states in maintaining security, enhancing resilience, and boosting productivity, solidifying their role in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Additionally, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Sen. Atiku Bagudu, expressed concern over the severe impact of the flooding on several local governments, which he found more extensive than during his previous visit. He commended the resilience and determination of the people of Kebbi and assured that they would be mobilized to achieve better outcomes in the upcoming dry season farming.
Sen. Bagudu also mentioned that, alongside the N3 billion support, the federal government had approved a Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund. This fund will finance various projects, including the construction of the Badagry-Sokoto road.
