MTN Leads Africa’s Tech Evolution Amid Economic Pressures — Karl Toriola

MTN Nigeria is doubling down on its position as a technology leader on the continent, with CEO Karl Toriola emphasizing the company’s historic role in pioneering mobile network advancements,  from 3G and 4G to launching Nigeria’s first 5G service.

In a bold infrastructure move, MTN unveiled the Dabengwa Sifiso Tier-III Data Centre, a $150 million facility positioned to be the largest modular data hub in West Africa. The centre is built to support AI-ready computing, enterprise-scale cloud solutions, and localized data pricing in naira, a strategic hedge against forex volatility and a step towards digital sovereignty.

Toriola noted that despite mounting economic challenges, MTN is committed to scaling tech infrastructure to power Nigeria’s innovation economy. The data centre, he said, will help local businesses reduce cost, enhance data privacy, and access high-performance computing without the need for overseas hosting.

With this launch, MTN strengthens its vision to become Africa’s digital transformation engine, anchoring Nigeria’s digital future on infrastructure, local relevance, and global competitiveness.
