Mexico’s Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, suggested on Monday that the Mexican government may respond with its own tariffs on U.S. imports if the incoming Trump administration imposes tariffs on Mexican exports.
Ebrard made these comments during an interview with local broadcaster Radio Formula, reflecting on President-elect Donald Trump’s previous threats to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican goods. This occurred during Trump’s earlier term when he sought concessions from the Mexican government regarding immigration enforcement.
“If you impose a 25% tariff on us, I will have to respond with tariffs of my own,” Ebrard stated. “If tariffs are applied, we will need to retaliate. What does that lead to? A significant cost for the North American economy.”
Ebrard emphasized that such tariffs would increase inflation in the U.S., which he described as an “important limitation” against engaging in a trade dispute of this nature.
