Meta Platforms’ potential investment in eyeglass maker EssilorLuxottica is viewed as a “symbolic” gesture aimed at solidifying their long-term collaboration, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an interview with The Verge. He emphasized that while the investment may not be substantial, it represents a commitment to their partnership. Zuckerberg expressed his strong belief in EssilorLuxottica’s future, stating that the company could evolve from being a leader in eyewear to a major player in the technology industry.

Earlier this month, EssilorLuxottica extended its partnership with Meta to develop smart eyewear. In July, EssilorLuxottica confirmed that Meta might take a 5% stake in the company, following reports by The Wall Street Journal about the ongoing discussions. During Meta’s annual Connect conference, the company unveiled its first augmented reality (AR) glasses prototype, Orion, underscoring its dedication to advancing smart eyewear technology.
