HSBC announced on Thursday that it will promote Lisa McGeough to the position of president and CEO for the United States, effective at the beginning of next year.
This appointment is part of a major restructuring initiative by new CEO Georges Elhedery, who has implemented several leadership changes and reorganized the bank’s geographic operations into East and West divisions. McGeough, currently serving as co-head of global banking coverage, will lead the expansion of HSBC’s wholesale business in the U.S.
Her predecessor, Michael Roberts, has been promoted to CEO of the newly merged corporate and institutional banking division and will be relocating to London. With over three decades of experience in banking, McGeough joined HSBC in 2021. Prior to that, she spent more than 15 years at Wells Fargo, where she was head of international banking and also co-led the corporate and investment banking unit.
Additionally, she managed the financial institutions and industrials groups. McGeough is making history as HSBC’s first female CEO in the U.S. region in more than a decade and only the second woman to hold the CEO position in the bank’s 150-year history.
