The Boring Company’s small-scale Las Vegas Loop, part of Elon Musk’s ambitious plans for high-speed “hyperloops,” has faced issues, with workers reporting the presence of chemical-filled sludge in the tunnels.
In particular, a tunnel section near the Las Vegas Strip, aimed at linking the Encore Las Vegas and Westgate hotels to the vast Las Vegas Convention Center, had its workers navigating through thick, muddy conditions.
The sludge, comprising water, sand, silt, and chemical accelerants used to solidify the tunnel’s concrete supports, caused discomfort and even chemical burns among the workers.
An investigation by Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration revealed through a freedom of information request by Bloomberg Businessweek, documented cases of workers suffering permanent scars from the chemical exposure, including severe facial burns.
One worker recounted the painful sensation of feeling like they were burning upon contact with the chemicals.
