Disney TV crime series renamed following Italian court order

Disney’s new TV crime series, originally titled “Avetrana – This is Not Hollywood,” will change its name to “This is Not Hollywood” in order to navigate legal challenges posed by an Italian court, the global entertainment giant announced on Tuesday.

The series is a fictionalized account of the 2010 murder of a 15-year-old girl by family members, as well as the media frenzy that ensued surrounding the case. It will be available on the Disney+ platform starting Wednesday.

The mayor of Avetrana, the small southern Italian town where the crime took place, took legal action against the series, claiming that its title tarnished the municipality’s reputation. The Italian-language series was originally set to launch on October 25, but a court in Taranto accepted the mayor’s appeal and temporarily halted the release, with a full hearing scheduled for November 5.

Film and TV industry representatives have criticized the court’s decision to suspend the series, with Chiara Sbarigia, the head of the Italian producers’ association APA, calling it “a serious violation of the principle of freedom of expression.”
