Chinese scientists reveal a robot with facial expression capabilities

Scientists at Fudan University in China have unveiled a groundbreaking emotional humanoid robot named “Guanghua No. 1,” capable of displaying a wide range of facial expressions.

Unveiled last Friday at the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, China, Guanghua No. 1 stands at 165 cm tall and weighs 62 kg. The robot boasts an advanced hierarchical generative brain model, enabling fluid movement and upright posture. It also features 45 intelligent joints for smooth, natural motion.

Guanghua No. 1 was specifically designed to address the needs of China’s aging population. According to Gan Zhongxue, Deputy Dean of the Academy for Engineering & Technology at Fudan University, market research identified elderly care as the primary application area for humanoid robots.

“The robot’s facial screen can express happiness, anger, sadness, and joy,” Gan Zhongxue explained. “Our goal is to develop a health companion that provides senior citizens with individualized, compassionate care, supporting their emotional well-being.”
